Will you help clean up our neighborhood? From 9am to Noon on Oct. 24, the Hillman City Business Association is organizing a Costumed Cleanup.
Cleaner-uppers will meet at Big Chickie starting at 8:30 for Tin Umbrella coffee and pastries, and will work till Noon. Following the cleanup, volunteers will have a chili lunch at Big Chickie with beer specials from Spinnaker Bay. Prizes will be offered for best costumes!
And just to sweeten the deal, all pre-registered participants will receive a free t-shirt with the below design

The local cable program “Neighborhoods” dropped in on Hillman City earlier this year and spent some time with a few of the Rainier Ave businesses that are anchoring economic development in our community, including Tim Umbrella Coffee, the Collaboratory, Spinnaker Bay, Jacob Willard Home, and Big Chickie.
It’s a family operation at Jacob Willard Home — dad Karl named the used furniture shop after his son — and the Rainier Ave. storefront is virtually overflowing stylish vintage and mid-century furniture. Occasionally on a summer evening, the store does actually spill onto the sidewalk — providing furniture for a community pop-up “Hillman City Living Room (pictured above)!” Karl also stocks mid-century collectibles and LPs, and offers upholstery and refinishing services, extending the life of older tables, chairs and other furniture.
Jacob Willard Home was in business online for three years before Karl decided it was time to open a showroom. He considered downtown locations before zeroing in on Hillman City, a neighborhood he describes as “up and coming.” Stop by to browse, to chat with Karl about interior design, or to hear what he’s got playing on the turntable!

Taking a walk? Why not sit down and read a book afterwards? Tiny, front-yard libraries are popping up in neighborhoods around Seattle and across the country. Many builders of these birdhouse-sized units are inspired by the Little Free Library movement launched by a carpenter and a community educator in Madison, Wisconsin. The boxes–some basic, some quite elaborate–invite passers by to stop, browse, chat, and to borrow (or leave) a good read or two.
Hillman City and Columbia City are becoming a little epicenter for these libraries in the Seattle area, as shown by Howard Gutknecht’s video tour above. Interested in creating your own little free library? Check out these photos for further inspiration!
On June 8, join people, pets and Team Kora at Seward Park for the Furry 5K—a fun run and walk to benefit the Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation!
Jonathan and Susan (your neighbors and the creators of HillmanCity.net) lost a dear friend this month, when our cat Kora was killed on the night of May 16. She had gotten loose from the house, wandered further than usual, and encountered a viciously cruel person or people, who strangled her and left her to die hanging from a neighbor’s fence.
We are still in shock at the loss of our sweet friend, but we take comfort in knowing that others in the neighborhood cared about Kora too. We’re also benefiting from the dedication of staff at the Seattle Animal Shelter, who delivered the sad news to us, are investigating the crime, and have arranged with the Humane Society to offer a $5000 reward for information leading to the person or people responsible for Kora’s death.
Now, we want to turn our grief into positive action–and to celebrate the lives of all of our furry 4-pawed friends. So we’re forming Team Kora to fundraise for the Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation in Kora’s memory, and we invite you to walk with us on June 8!

Hillman City has a very active crossfit gym. Throughout the day, it’s not unusual to spot crossfitters taking laps around the block. People of all fitness levels are encouraged to visit Rocket Crossfit and learn more about this challenging and results-driven workout.
Wednesday through Saturday evenings, a rotating food truck parks next door offering post-workout meals.
